Sustainable Design Assessment in Planning

Organica Engineering has helped many Councils design and implement their sustainable design in planning SDAPP programs, including providing consulting, implementation and training support. We have also helped many Councils implement sustainable design into their capital works and facility management programs.

ESD and WSUD Referrals Support

For many years Ian Adams and the team at Organica Engineering have been the technical and facilitation support behind Councils wishing to implement Sustainability into planning assessment.

Organica Engineering and our team members have successfully introduced and established a similar Environmentally Sustainable Design Assessment process in the planning departments at Knox City Council, Darebin Council, Bayside, Whitehorse, Port Phillip, Yarra Ranges and Manningham Councils – and we provide the service of Sustainability Officer or remote assessing of permit applications on an ongoing basis.

Ian Adams – principal at Organica Engineering – has previously assisted in the development of the BESS, InSite Water, and Green Star tools.

The role of Sustainability Advisor is undertaken by a qualified Organica Engineering staff member in-house or remotely as needed. Organica’s team have extensive experience Council ESD referrals including assessing SDA and SMP reports against planning ESD policies.

We can also assess stormwater and civil engineering drainage reports against the requirements of the Integrate Water Management (IWM) and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) victorian planning policies (VPPs and VPFs).

We also have the technical capability to assess STORM, InSite Water, Green Star, First Rate, Music, daylight model and BESS reports. Our focus is on quick turnaround times for referrals cost effectively delivering support to SDAPP councils.

In-House ESD training support for planners

We can provide in-house training support for Sustainable Design Assessment in Planning Process (SDAPP) program used by most Melbourne metropolitan councils, as well as how BESS and Green Star can be used to efficiently generate and assess the sustainability of planning permit applications.

We will provide a technically accurate, comprehensive training package delivered in a professional and engaging manner at each training session, enabling and supporting planners to understand and assess the SDA reports using the BESS tool.

We will look at local Council MSS, local activity centre, VPP and LPP policies that support and require sustainability assessment of applications.  We will workshop with planners the most efficient way to assess smaller applications, and discuss how to refer more complex applications for assessment.

The training will look at example SDA, BESS and stormwater reports and discuss how to determine if a submission meets Council requirements.  We will also discuss where to find further information and assistance.

Online Sustainable Design Assessment for planners training

This course is an introduction to sustainable design assessment in the planning system for Planners and other relevant Council officers such Sustainability referrals officers. We look at the Sustainable Design Assessment in Planning Process (SDAPP) program used by most Melbourne metropolitan councils, as well as how BESS and Green Star can be used to efficiently generate and assess the sustainability of planning permit applications.

We will look at local Council MSS, local activity centre, VPP and LPP policies that support and require sustainability assessment of applications. This training covers the most efficient way to assess smaller applications, and discuss how to refer more complex applications for assessment.

The training is provided via an automated web based platform for training delivery, to widen the training base.  A website has already been created, is functional, and it can be viewed at: http://www.esd.management/

“One word – Informative”

“Very well presented with good balance of visuals, concepts and using relevant examples.”

“Excellent. I had no knowledge about the area. Ian made it interesting even for the novice. He also made it clear that there are no simple solutions. I enjoyed learning from an expert that appreciated complexity.”
